Is Crabapple in Milton or Alpharetta? What a 30004 or 30009 Address Means

The short answer

Crabapple is the downtown of the City of Milton, Georgia, which began on December 1, 2006. Many Crabapple businesses print an Alpharetta postal name or a 30009 ZIP, but that is mail, not the city line. The US Census geocoder places City Hall, Crabapple Market and the Milton Library inside Milton city, ZIP area 30004.

Historic Crabapple is part of the City of Milton, Georgia, and has been since the city began on December 1, 2006. The confusion comes from mail: many Crabapple addresses carry an Alpharetta postal name or a 30009 ZIP. A postal address is not a city line. The US Census geocoder puts Milton City Hall and Crabapple Market inside Milton city, Fulton County, ZIP area 30004.

The short answer

Crabapple is not its own city. The City of Milton calls Crabapple the heart of Milton, in the southwestern corner of the city, and says it is home to City Hall, the Milton Library and many of the city’s schools. Milton’s own history page dates the city to December 1, 2006, after Gov. Sonny Perdue signed HB 1470 on March 28, 2006 and more than 85 percent of voters approved the cityhood referendum.

So when someone says “downtown Crabapple,” they mean the old crossroads district that now serves as Milton’s downtown: City Hall on Heritage Walk, Crabapple Market and its Green across the street, Broadwell Pavilion, and the historic buildings where five roads meet.

What the Census geocoder says about three Crabapple addresses

We ran three well-known downtown addresses through the US Census Bureau’s geocoder on October 18, 2026. It reports the incorporated place (the city), the county and the ZIP code tabulation area (ZCTA), which is the Census Bureau’s map version of a ZIP code.

Address as printed Census: city Census: ZCTA
Milton City Hall, 2006 Heritage Walk, Milton, GA 30004 Milton city, Fulton County 30004
Crabapple Market, 12650 Crabapple Rd., Milton, GA 30004 Milton city, Fulton County 30004
Milton Library, 855 Mayfield Rd., Milton, GA 30009 Milton city 30004

The library row is the one to remember. The Fulton County Library System prints the branch’s mailing address with ZIP 30009, yet the Census places the same building in Milton city and in ZCTA 30004. A ZIP code alone does not tell you which city an address is in.

The library's mailing address uses ZIP 30009 even though the Census places it in Milton city and in ZCTA 30004, so the ZIP code alone does not tell you which city a Crabapple address is in. (US Census Bureau, checked Oct 18, 2026)

Same street, two city names on the door

The clearest proof that a postal name is not a city line sits on one block of Crabapple Road inside Crabapple Market. These are the addresses each business prints on its own website, as we read them on October 18, 2026:

Two businesses at 12640 Crabapple Road, two different city names, one ZIP. Neither is wrong as mail. Both buildings sit in the market that the Census places in Milton.

Why the names tangle

Part of it is old. Milton County was created in 1857 from parts of Cherokee, Forsyth and Cobb counties, with Alpharetta as its county seat, according to the City of Milton. The Milton Historical Society records that Milton County was merged into Fulton County on January 1, 1932. From 1932 until 2006 there was no City of Milton at all, so there was no Milton for a mailing address to name.

Part of it is geography. The City of Milton says the city borders Roswell to the southwest and Alpharetta to the south. Crabapple sits in that southwestern corner, so you are never far from a city line. Crabapple Road itself keeps going south out of the village toward Roswell, and businesses farther down it, such as Alpine Bakery & Pizzeria at 12315 Crabapple Road with an Alpharetta address, may well be outside Milton. We have not checked those addresses, so we do not say either way. The same goes for the Crabapple name on schools: the middle school that carries it is in Roswell, not the village, while the Fulton County Schools zone map assigns the City Hall block to Northwestern Middle School.

How to tell which city an address is in

  1. Run it through the Census geocoder. Pick the “Geographies” search, enter the street address, and read the “Incorporated Places” line. If it says Milton city, the address is inside Milton.
  2. Ignore the ZIP. As the library shows, 30009 and 30004 both turn up inside Milton.
  3. Ask who sends the tax bill. Milton levies its own city millage; the operating rate for tax year 2025 was 4.193 mills, per the City of Milton. Milton sends its own city property tax bills, expected in late October 2026 this year.
  4. For schools, use the district’s tool. Fulton County Schools says to confirm any specific address with its Office of Student Assignment at (470) 254-5550, because zones can change.

What follows the city line, and what does not

Service Who provides it in Crabapple
City government, permits, PTV registration City of Milton, 2006 Heritage Walk, 678-242-2500 (City of Milton)
Police and fire Milton Police and Milton Fire; non-emergency 678-297-6300, option 1. Emergencies: 911.
Garbage No city service; residents hire a private hauler permitted by the City (City of Milton)
Water and sewer Fulton County (Fulton County)
Public schools Fulton County Schools
Library Fulton County Library System, Milton branch

The county services do not change at the Milton line, which is one more reason people in north Fulton use “Alpharetta” loosely. City services do change, and so does who you call about a road, a golf cart permit or a zoning question.

A few numbers that help

Milton had 41,296 residents in the 2020 Census and covers 38.49 square miles of land, according to US Census QuickFacts. About 85 percent of that land is zoned agricultural, meaning residential lots of at least an acre, per the City of Milton. The Crabapple form-based code, Article 7A of Milton’s development code, applies to the downtown district and is written to keep it walkable.
